Organic Bunny Approved SPF

With SO many different clean SPF options to choose from in the Organic Bunny store, I realized that it just might be tricky to pick out the best SPF for you so in an effort to make SPF shopping a little bit easier on you, I will break down my top picks by category!

The best part of every SPF you will see below is that it is Reef-Friendly, Non-Nano and entirely mineral-based which means there are no yucky toxins to worry about being on you or your family. Remember that because these use minerals to block the sun instead of chemicals that absorb into your skin, they need to be thoroughly cleansed off with a gel-based cleanser after each use. I suggest using the Aleavia Facial Cleanser to effectively get your SPF off each day.

Even Gisele Skips Toxic Sunscreens

I love that more and more influential women like Gisele are speaking out about how toxic conventional sunscreens are. Back in 2011 Gisele publicly spoke out saying “I cannot put this poison on my skin, I do not use anything synthetic.” Her tips for safer sun protection? She avoids the sun during peak times and instead opts for heading outside earlier or later in the days.

So, what’s the deal with sunscreens? Well, most contain Oxybenzone, a hormone-disrupting chemical that can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream where it’s shown to attack DNA cells. Many even contribute this chemical to the rise of Melanoma, yes that’s right SUNSCREEN may cause cancers more than the actual sun! Oxybenzone also comes with links to breast cancer, eczema, allergic reactions and more. For the full article on chemical-based sunscreen risks, click here.

If you have to go out in the sun, here are some tips!

  1. Avoid peak hours, head outside earlier or later in your day.
  2. Wear a large hat, and loose clothing to protect your skin when outside.
  3. If you still need sunscreen, choose a safer brand like Raw Elements USA that is Organic, Non-Nano mineral based and super clean, they even have tinted ones to avoid white streaks! Code organicbunny saves $$ too!
  4. Re-apply your sunscreen after getting wet, sweating, or just after 2 hours or so of being outside. 1 application of sunscreen never equals all day protection.

These are such important tips, please share these with your friends before Summer hits!

Best & Worst Sunscreens to Use

Because Summer is rapidly approaching, I felt compelled to share this Sunscreen Hall of Shame list created by the Environmental Working Group as it exposes the worst, most unsafe sunscreens you may be using on yourself and families. Every single time I see someone getting sprayed down with a bottle of Banana Boat or Coppertone, I die a little inside because I know that most people simply aren’t aware of the toxins that really exist in these products. We use sunscreen because we are told it’s safe and what we should do, but, do you really know what you are applying to your skin in the hot sun? Here is what the EWG has found.

There are a lot of sunscreens on the market: some good, some bad and then the shameful. Those in the last category are not only a waste of money and time, but also potentially harmful. Here are our picks for products to banish from your beach bag forever.

  • Spray sunscreens can be inhaled, and they don’t cover your skin completely.
  • SPF’s above 50+ trick you into thinking they prevent sun damage, they don’t.
  • SPF protection tops out at 30 to 50.
  • Oxybenzone can disrupt the hormone system.
  • Retinyl Palmitate may trigger damage, possibly cancer.
